Beirut is often referred to as the "Paris of the Middle East" because of its dominance in culture, tourism, fashion and education in the region. Due to wars and conflicts, that title has slipped away but Beirut is rebuilding at a massive pace due to an increase in foreign investment notably from Europe, but since the war with Israel in 2006 the majority of the country’s youth has left the Lebanon. Beirut is considered a possible candidate for the 2024 Olympics.
